We’ve claimed 1 Corinthians 15:58 as the key verse for our mission at Nothing Wasted. “So, my dear brothers and sisters, stand strong. Don’t let anything change you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord. You know that your work in the Lord is never wasted.” Never wasted….the name “nothing wasted” has more than one meaning for us. From a thrift store perspective we love the idea that odd items pulled from someone’s basement or storage unit finds a new life; that items wasted in a dusty tub can be saved and used again. To explain the spiritual meaning of that title let me tell you about Mike and Carolyn. About 20 years ago they were going through a rough time. They had experienced a series of great tragedies that would send most people into a tailspin of grief and self pity. But that wasn’t the fact. They smiled even though they grieved. They kept moving even when they felt paralyzed with loss. They were strong, and their demeanor was full of grace and peace. Everyone who knew and loved them was inspired by their faith. Just a few months later my family experienced a series of tragedies and we were often tempted to despair but instead kept saying, “if Mike and Carolyn can make it through, so can we.” Nothing about what Mike and Carolyn went through was good, but God brought good out of it. We were inspired and encouraged by their strength and we were able to make it through our circumstances. That is redemption. God wastes nothing. No matter how dark the present is, God always has eyes on the future. What good can come out of my trial? How can I grow and change and become stronger? Who will be encouraged by my experiences. It’s not possible to avoid trouble. We are human this world is broken, but it is a great comfort to know that in time I will be able to see good come. God brings good from every experience. Nothing wasted.
